Why Medicine?

Before I stepped into this medical degree, I took a 1-year gap. This all started when I chose computer science in UTAR after my SPTM. It was fun, fascinating, amazed by how these bunch of text can produce software and make everything works. It is all about the algorithm, it is a step-by-step logic. It is all fun, but it is not my passion, still not my dream.

My dream since high school is always about being a doctor and due to some circumstances, I chose computer science. I thought I was fine about this and it will be my future job after all. But there is a difference between a job and a career. A job is about working for money and career is about chasing our dreams.

IT IS NEVER TOO LATE !

I wanted to work as a Doctor without Borders, I wanted to join the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative that aim to cure all disease! I know that this will be a long and steep journey but I’m ready to face all the challenges that are coming to my face! And I hope all of you are happy with your life right now and dare to pursue your dream, it is never too late!

Together, we make the world a better place!

Communication Skills

We learnt many techniques to deal with our future patients facing different situations. Difficult communication situations like breaking bad news, appropriate communication skills culturally, communicating with children, communicating with victims of abuse are not easy to handle. As a future doctor we have to learn the proper and simplest way to communicate our patient to gain their trust and their compliance.

We have left a few weeks to end this class. We will really miss Mr Nama because he will be retiring after finish teaching our batch.

Problem Based Solving

Problem-based learning (PBL) is a student-centre pedagogy in which students learn about a subject through the experience of solving an open-ended problem found in trigger material. The PBL process does not focus on problem-solving with a defined solution, but it allows for the development of other desirable skills and attributes. This includes knowledge acquisition, enhanced group collaboration and communication.

We have about 2 to 3 PBLs for each system block. I find it fun to conduct PBLs as if we are solving a mystery with clues given to us. In each PBL, we are asked to come out with some learning outcomes on our own and do further researches about them.

A doctor will not get his diagnosis without any knowledge. He has to combine all the symptoms and test results bits by bits, in order to correctly diagnose a patient. PBL is a practice for us as a future doctor, that we learn how to collect information in order to create a correct diagnosis.

I am trying so hard to list out my points… that’s what often happen in problem based learning session 🙂

Seminars

We had 5 seminars so far. Im having my seminar in this coming Thursday and Im feel like still not well prepared and I’m still trying my best to perfect it. The best preparation time is usually in the weekend.

I like how seminars motivate us to search and dig more on our own. We learnt better during self exploring process. I like to present my well prepared topics to my friends. This is what we will do in the future, we will share our discovery in conference in front of our colleagues and the public.

With every seminar, I slowly overcome my fear toward the crowd and Im starting to enjoy my time on the stage, but only when I’m well prepared.

Hospital Sungai Buloh Visit

During the end of of GIT block we visited the sungai buloh government hospital for a case based learning. for the case based learning we had to interview a patient and obtain their history and then we were assigned to discuss about the case and present the case to the lecturer.

The lecturer then gave us the feedback regarding the case and how we could improve. overall this visit was really special to me as it was the first time visiting to a malaysian government hospital and i got to interact with the patients and their family members.

BTW the picture above really looks like the haunted picture in horror movies!!!

It was indeed a great experience, we were taken around, visiting each part of the hospital. We also got to experience a real history taking session with a real patient with gastrointestinal stromal tumour (GIST).

My magic hand pulled Robert here in a sec!

Clinical skills suite

All of my classmates love this session! We all love our lecturer – Dr Naren! He is very patient with us, he bear with us even if we are too dumb to understand very simple things. Sometimes we are quite slow to catch up new information especially every Monday’s early morning class, we havent recover from the comfortableness of the weekend!! And he is so considerate!!

In this class, we learnt our hands-on. I believe that most of us are familiar  to venipuncture, which is a process of drawing blood from our veins. Another fun activities are palpation and percussion of the abdomen. We practice this on a real stimulated patient, which our school hire for us. I remember we did this on March or April 2019, this is the first time we practice on a real patient, before this, we usually practice on mannequins. Most of us are excited and worried at the same time, we are worried that we might hurt the patient or perform the wrong procedure. But our worries were soon overcame by the excitement and the more we perform, we became more confident.

This is the session where we get a close grip to our clinical phase. We all are excited for every CSS class and I hope that we won’t forget the hands-on and theory we learnt in this session.

National Blood Bank Visit

We visited pusat darah negara during our haematology and immunology block. we were accompanied by dr Farzana Rizwan and Dr imam sheikh. at first we were given a small lecture by one of the staffs there. We were told about the importance and types of blood people normally donates and we also got the opportunity to learn about a new blood type called bombay blood type. In addition to this we learnt about the entire blood donation and transfusion procedure with their underlying risks.

I donated blood in here too!! It is really fun to donate. We got to know about how the processing of blood is done in there laboratories together with their storage. The information i learnt from this visit helped me in my exam and im sure it will come handy even in future when i start my career.
